Back and Flank Liposuction in Lebanon: What It Treats

Back and flank liposuction removes localised fat from the back and the sides of the waist through small incisions, using a fine suction tube. Liposuction suits a person of normal weight with firm, elastic skin and a fat deposit that diet and exercise have not shifted.

What back and flank fat is

The flanks are the sides of the waist, between the ribs and the hips. The back is the upper and middle back. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) lists the abdomen and waist, the back and the hips among the areas that liposuction can treat, and the operation works on the layer of fat just under the skin.

How the operation is done

Liposuction uses a hollow stainless steel tube, a cannula, passed through small incisions. Diluted local anaesthetic is infused first to reduce bleeding and trauma. The cannula loosens the fat with a controlled back-and-forth motion, and the fat is suctioned out with a surgical vacuum or a syringe (ASPS).

ASPS lists several techniques: traditional, power-assisted, ultrasound-assisted (VASER is a newer form), laser-assisted and water-assisted. Which one fits is discussed at the consultation. At this practice the pockets are marked with the patient standing, so they are outlined as they actually sit. Sedation is used for one small area, and a general anaesthetic when several areas are treated together.

Who it suits

ASPS describes the ideal candidate as an adult no more than 30% away from their ideal weight, with firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone, in good health, a non-smoker and non-vaper, with specific goals in mind. ASPS also states that liposuction works for people of normal weight who have some extra fat. In the back and flanks, that is a person whose roll is made of fat sitting on skin that is still firm.

When fat is not the whole story

Skin that is soft and thin from stretch marks, weight loss or ageing does not reshape as well, and further operations can be needed to remove and tighten extra skin (ASPS). Liposuction is not a treatment for cellulite (ASPS). If the problem at the waist is mostly loose skin, removing fat from beneath it will not solve it.

ASPS notes that liposuction can be done alone or together with other operations such as a tummy tuck. How to tell which one a waistline needs is covered in liposuction or tummy tuck: which one do you need?.

Results, swelling and the scales

The new contour shows once the swelling and fluid retention that follow liposuction subside (ASPS). A 2025 multicentre study in Scientific Reports found that post-liposuction fluid retention can obscure the weight-reducing effect of the fat removed, so the number on the scales is a poor early measure. Liposuction is a contouring operation, and ASPS states that it is not a treatment for obesity.

With a healthy diet and exercise, the loss of the fatty tissue should be maintained, and substantial weight gain can alter the result (ASPS). A multicentre prospective cohort of 1,248 patients, followed for a mean of 52 months, concluded that modern liposuction gives durable improvement and high satisfaction with low rates of major complications (Aesthetic Surgery Journal, 2026).

Recovery, in one paragraph

These are published ranges for liposuction, not figures for this practice. An elasticated support garment or compression bandage is fitted after the operation and worn constantly in the weeks after the operation (the NHS gives no exact number). Stitches, where they do not dissolve, come out after about a week. Strenuous activity is avoided for the first 2 weeks, gentle exercise starts at 3 to 4 weeks, and strenuous activity waits until 10 to 12 weeks. Numbness goes in 6 to 8 weeks, and the area can take 6 months to settle completely (NHS). The full timeline is in liposuction recovery in Lebanon.

Risks, in plain words

  • Bruising, swelling and fluid accumulation (ASPS).
  • Irregular contours or asymmetries, and irregular pigmentation (ASPS).
  • A change in skin sensation that can persist (ASPS).
  • Infection, and poor wound healing (ASPS).
  • Deep vein thrombosis, and cardiac and pulmonary complications (ASPS).
  • Damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels and muscles (ASPS).
  • A result that falls short of what was wanted, which can lead to a second operation (NHS).

ASPS adds that special considerations apply when large amounts of fat are suctioned (ASPS gives more than five litres as the guide).

What it will not do

  • It does not treat obesity and is not a substitute for diet and exercise (ASPS).
  • It does not remove cellulite or stretch marks (NHS).
  • It does not tighten loose skin.
  • It does not come with a guarantee. The NHS states that results cannot be guaranteed.

At this practice

Dr. Vincent ElKhoury, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, examines every patient himself and operates on every liposuction case himself, at Hayek Hospital or Bellevue Medical Center, after a consultation at his clinic in Mansourieh, Metn. The flanks and the back are among the areas treated. What liposuction changes, how it is done, and the printed patient information sheet are on the liposuction in Lebanon page, and the questions worth asking are in questions to ask before liposuction in Lebanon. This page is information, not advice, and it does not replace the examination in person.

Questions

FAQ

What are the flanks, and can they be treated?

The flanks are the sides of the waist, between the ribs and the hips. ASPS lists the abdomen and waist, the back and the hips among the areas liposuction can treat, and the flanks and the back are treated at this practice after an examination.

Is liposuction of the back and flanks a weight-loss operation?

No. It is a contouring operation that removes localised fat, and ASPS states that it is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for diet and exercise. Fluid retention after surgery can also hide the weight of the fat removed, so the scales are a poor early measure (Scientific Reports, 2025).

Who is a candidate for back and flank liposuction?

ASPS describes an adult no more than 30% away from their ideal weight with firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone, in good health, a non-smoker and non-vaper, with specific goals. A back or flank roll made of fat on firm skin suits it. The examination decides.

Will liposuction tighten loose skin on the waist?

Not reliably. ASPS states that skin that is soft and thin from stretch marks, weight loss or ageing does not reshape as well, and further surgery can be needed to remove and tighten it. Whether the skin will contract is judged at the examination.

Will the fat come back after liposuction?

ASPS states that the loss of the fatty tissue should be maintained with continued healthy diet and exercise, and that substantial weight gain can alter the result. The NHS describes the results as long-lasting provided a healthy weight is maintained.

How long is recovery after liposuction?

Published ranges: a compression garment worn constantly in the weeks after the operation (the NHS gives no exact number), gentle exercise at 3 to 4 weeks, strenuous activity at 10 to 12 weeks, and 6 months at the longest for the area to settle completely (NHS). The timeline for a specific patient is gone through before surgery.
