Medical fees are not advertised, in keeping with the professional rules for doctors in Lebanon. They are discussed privately, at the consultation, once the operation that actually fits you is known.
There is also a practical reason. The same name, rhinoplasty or liposuction, covers operations that differ a great deal in what is done and how long it takes. A figure given before an examination would describe someone else’s operation, not yours.
What decides the cost of an operation
Five things shape the cost of any surgical procedure:
- The operation itself. How much is being done and how long it takes: upper eyelids alone or all four, one area of liposuction or several, a first rhinoplasty or a revision.
- The hospital. The operating theatre, the nursing team and, when it is needed, an overnight stay. Operations here are done at Hayek Hospital or Bellevue Medical Center.
- The anaesthetic. A local anaesthetic with light sedation and a general anaesthetic are different in what they need, and the anaesthetist’s time follows the length of the operation.
- What your health needs before surgery. Blood tests, and sometimes an opinion from another specialist, so that the operation is safe for you.
- Recovery. Dressings, medication, and a compression garment after operations such as liposuction, tummy tuck or gynecomastia surgery.
What matters more than the fee
Cost is a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer at the consultation. It should not be the deciding one. What decides whether an operation goes well is who operates, where, who gives the anaesthetic, and who sees you afterwards.
- Is the surgeon a board-certified plastic surgeon, and will they perform the operation themselves?
- Is it done in a hospital, with an anaesthetist present throughout?
- Who do you call at night in the first week, and who sees you at the follow-up visits?
- What happens if something needs attention after the operation?
These are the questions worth asking any surgeon, here or elsewhere.
Insurance
Cosmetic surgery is generally not covered by insurance. Some operations have a functional part: correcting a deviated septum during a rhinoplasty, or removing upper eyelid skin that hangs over the lashes and narrows vision. Some insurers cover that part. Ask your insurer before the operation, and bring what they tell you to the consultation.
